Although the use of hand sanitizers is also recommended, experts agree that washing hands with soap and running water is a must. Some media are busy re-popularizing the correct hand washing technique. The question is, do you have to use special soap, such as soap that is antibacterial? Or are all soaps equally effective.


Is It Necessary to Use Special Soap?

All types of viruses including COVID-19 can be active outside the human body for hours, even days. They can spread through droplets, such as when sneezing, coughing, or when the sufferer speaks. Disinfectants, hand sanitizer fluids, wet wipes, gels, and creams containing alcohol are all useful for killing this virus, but not as effective as soap.

When doing daily activities, it can be difficult for hands to avoid viruses, bacteria, or germs. The cause is that the eye is unable to see the virus directly, so hand washing is the best step to avoid contracting the disease. According to the Huffington Post, family physician Dr. Neha Vyas at the Cleveland Clinic said you should wash your hands for at least 20 seconds.

In addition, he also added that this type of soap is not important. This is because COVID-19 is a virus, so antibacterial hand soap does not give an additional advantage over other types of soap. 

Dr. Carl Fichtenbaum, an infectious disease expert at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine also said that so far there is no clear evidence that antibacterial soaps work better than other soaps. He said that the most important thing is to wash your hands for at least 20 seconds with the correct technique. 


Why Is Soap Considered The Most Effective?

World Economic Forum professor Palli Thordarson at the School of Chemistry at the University of New South Wales, Australia also took to Twitter to explain some of the molecular chemistry-related things that help explain why soap is more effective at killing viruses. 

Thordarson explained that viruses tend to consist of three things: the nucleic acid genome (genetic material: DNA or RNA), a protein that wraps around nucleic acids and helps replicate viruses in the host's body, and a fatty outer layer. The connection between these three parts of the component forms the structure of the virus, but the connection is weak because there is no covalent bond that provides a more stable structure.

Instead, says Thordarson, viral assembly is based on weak "non-covalent" interactions between proteins, RNA and lipids. They together act together like adhesives making it difficult to break down self-formed viral particles.

However, it is possible to break down particles with soap, which is good at dissolving the lipid layers that surround the virus. It also destroys all other weak bonds in the virus. Once that happens, the virus will effectively fall apart.

Washing with water alone is much less likely to remove the virus from the surface of the skin. So, wash your hands with soap because it contains fat-like compounds called amphiphiles, which are similar to lipids found in viral membranes. When soap comes into contact with this fatty substance, it binds to it and causes it to detach from the virus. It also forces the virus to detach from the skin.


When Soap and Water Are Not Available

Of course, not in all places there is clean water, soap, and sink. Therefore, hand sanitizer can also be an alternative. Always carry a small bottle of hand sanitizer and use it after coming into contact with people and surface objects such as handles on buses or trains, door knobs, or other objects that are prone to being touched by many people. 

Use a hand sanitizer with an alcohol content of at least 60 percent or more. Alcohol-free hand sanitizer products are currently also sold in various places, but they are not recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The CDC recommends soap and water because the process is better at killing certain types of germs, including the COVID-19 virus. Especially if your hands are dirty or greasy, the hand sanitizer will also not clean them effectively.
